The Computational Science Division (CSD) is one of the pivotal divisions in the Physical And Life Sciences Department (PLSD).

Mission:The division is saddled with the responsibility of carrying out multi-disciplinary scientific research that is crucial for advancing the Agency’s space science programs.

The division has a staff membership of three scientists and it is committed to achieving her goals by applying computational techniques, mathematical models and simulations to analyze, interpret, and solve complex problems in the realm of space science.

Scientists within the division are involved in the development of algorithms and software tools to process and extract valuable information from large datasets. Such vast amounts of data are collected from space missions, satellites, telescopes, and other space-based instruments.

Achievements and Collaborations: Part of our achievement in this regards is the division a strong collaboration with the Physical Science Division since 2022 in handling large dataset extraction, cleaning, wrangling, transformation and storage from the Lightning Detection project. This project has been able to detect thunderstorms and other lightning activities within Nigeria and other neighboring Western African Nations. It is still an ongoing project and the data is being archived for future research.

Capacity DevelopmentThe division also invests in talent development and human capacity building through training programs and internships. In the second quarter of 2023, we organized and facilitated a 3-Day Data Science Workshop for Scientists and Engineers and we were able to train about 30 technical staff. The 3-Day workshop eventually spanned into a 10-week of continuous virtual learning programme which was facilitated by the three staff members of the division. Currently, the division has three interns which are actively involved in computational electromagnetic, robotics and data analytics projects.
